Ho99o9
Scala, London
seventh November 2022

Punk rap debauchery ensues throughout the notorious Scala tonight as abrasive U.S. duo Ho99o9 (pronounced Horror) play to a room filled with sweaty cavemen.

The humorous factor is, I solely actually heard of this band about 2 months in the past when a buddy of mine spoke about them and the way he thought their title was pronounced ‘Hoggog’ – of which I see his level. However upon listening, it turns into clear why the title ‘Horror’ fits them a lot. They’re a horror-fuelled, carnivalesque occasion of theatrics, head banging, and a number of the finest smelling weed I’ve ever smelt in my life (side observe to the band: please let me know who you bought that from).

Combining the sounds of metallic, rap, industrial noise, punk, techno and every thing else that you simply’d hate to hearken to on a hangover, the duo present what the way forward for music actually is. Combining loopy costumes, risky aggression and violence that was considerably encouraging, the New Jersey duo present what music might, can and must be. Politically charged, clever and tasteful, the music this duo are making is – and I don’t say this calmly – fairly groundbreaking.

The group is stuffed with sweaty bystanders – lengthy hair, spike jackets, tank tops, muscle-y arms (you get the drill) who don’t let their exhaustion cease their power. For an act that solely has drums as their instrument addition (the remainder achieved all by means of pads), the environment nonetheless feels as if it has the backing of 100 males. There’s a caveman-esque manner to the group, displaying what human intuition actually is when pissed off- and that’s to beat the crap out of one another (however to at all times assist your sufferer again up of the ground). It’s completely chaotic and everyone seems to be riled-up with aggression that appears like they’ve been ready a lifetime to unleash. Charged to most energy, Ho99o9 unshackle the room for an hour and a half with ‘destruction’ as the one goal. It’s no marvel the safety keep back- I wouldn’t fancy attempting to cease this both.

There are injections of techno and Frank Sinatra’s ‘I Did It My Approach’ which hilariously reveals the juxtapositioning of getting everybody one minute beating the shit out of one another, to then dancing to basic pop tunes. Vocalist, Eaddy switches between shouting by means of a normal mic to by means of a retro, orange cellphone, with theOGM switching between music and rap duties. Sporting outfits comparable to witch hats, skeleton make up, basic fits and hairstyles that I might solely dream of getting, the set ends with them each topless (with completely no complaints right here).

How they preserve the power up, I’ll by no means know, particularly with theOGM consistently chuffing away on this joint (critically, I would like the variety of whoever you bought it from). In the direction of the tip of the set, individuals are flagging however powering by means of. Eaddy throws his sweaty physique onto of the exhausted viewers and you’ll see the arms of everybody, drained from all power, engulfing him and fortunately consuming him alive. This present can solely be outlined as ‘absolute madness’ and with a threat of sounding like an previous fart, it was hectic for a Monday night time. However I merely wouldn’t have had it every other method.

And, regardless of being balls deep in my overdraft, I nonetheless purchased a t-shirt. 10/10 would advocate.
