Handel’s six Trio Sonatas, Op. 2 (HWV 386-391) had been written between 1717 and 1719 and circulated in a bootleg version till their official publication in 1733. Following the “slow-fast-slow-fast” mannequin of the Italian Sonata da chiesa (“church sonata”), these Sonatas symbolize the end result of a kind popularized by Arcangelo Corelli within the 1680s. Handel’s Trio Sonatas had been scored for “two violins, two oboes, or two flutes and basso continuo.”
Within the Baroque interval, composers freely borrowed, recycled, and tailored music in a approach which was much like jazz musicians of the 20th century. The opening motion of the Sonata in B minor, HWV 386 relies on an aria from the opera, Octavia, by Handel’s German up to date, Reinhard Keiser (1674-1739). The ultimate motion is a spritely adaptation of a duet from Handel’s Chandos Anthem No 6, HWV 251b, Why So Filled with Grief, O My Soul. In between, comes a sensuous and quietly introspective Largo. All through, the B minor Trio Sonata is an excellent celebration of melody.
Launched in 2009, right here is Richard Egarr’s distinctive recording with the Academy of Historical Music. The recording options flutist Rachel Brown, violinists Rodolfo Richter and Pavlo Beznosiuk, and cellist Joseph Crouch.
